In July 2023, Kenneth E. Barnes Sr, MS, discussed with Kamal Ali, owner of the historic Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C., the urgent need to address the gun violence and youth violence facing DC. Following this meeting, they reached out to criminal justice advocate Roach Brown, community leader Tyrone Parker, and respected psychiatrist Dr. William Lawson, MD, Ph.D, DLFAPA. Together, they founded Time for Us to Get Involved, Inc., a collective response to these persistent challenges.
This growing 501(c)3 non-profit brings together over 80 individuals and organizations, including nonprofits, private businesses, government agencies, media, religious institutions, and engaged community members. To date, the group has hosted three successful town halls, creating platforms for solution-driven dialogue and meaningful community input.
The collective’s mission is to unify and organize stakeholders across the DMV to reduce violence, support families, and empower youth by organizing hands-on engagement, mental health support, and resource alignment. We are working toward a future where every youth and family in the DMV can thrive in a safe, supportive, and opportunity-rich environment built through sustained collaboration, community leadership, and collective action.
Who We Are

Together, We Can!
Gun violence and youth trauma, and mental health disparities are not just headlines in the DMV they are daily realities for too many families. That’s why Time for Us to Get Involved was founded: to be the connective force behind a powerful group to create lasting change.
We are the organizer, the convener, and the bridge-builder uniting more than 80 passionate partners across nonprofits, government, business, media, and faith communities. Our mission is to amplify their work, align their efforts, and unlock collective solutions that reduce violence, strengthen families, and uplift our youth.
Since our founding, we’ve hosted major community town halls where real conversations lead to real action. These events have become trusted spaces for listening, strategizing, and collaborating across neighborhoods and sectors.
